If we're going to be accurate, then they should just remove Katana's from the game until they add the correct fighting style - which I might add wouldn't all for shield use.

Good point. Looks kinda weird when you're wielding a Katana in one hand, and holding a Big a$$ shield in another ;p Then again one can always opt NOT to hold a shield (at his/her expense) or use another off hand item on the other hand....

Still... the current sword swinging style would still be there though so It might continue to look weird nevertheless...

If you want to sheath your weapon, just switch to an empty weapon slot.

Well, that's a viable option too... but wouldn't it be cool if you can actually still see your sword sheathed, than just seeing it dissappear? (on the other hand, having a weapon magically dissappear would also seem kinda cool too ;p)

Bleh, I'm sick of seeing the flame wars over Ninja and Samurai.. Even though its completely valid and the netspeaking leeters still think its too kidy.

I'll add my opinion...

WARRIOR - Generic fighter guy....
ASSASSIN - Generic sneaky guy...

Warriors have armors which represent different forms of warriors..
Gladiators - Gladiator
Ascalon - Barbarian
Knight/Platemail - Knight

Assassins have armors which represent different forms off bondage. /Sarcasm (This excludes the 20/20 blindess and weakness armor, which is the only decent looking one. http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1834/untitled4cq.png ). They need armors to represent the different styles of assassins such as an Arabic theme, Ninja theme, and Medavial Thief theme. If anyone responds to this with Assassins aren't Ninjas, don't; its a drowned out excuse.

Sorry to necro the flame war but... The only MMORPG with an actual class called Ninja is Final Fantasy XII, thus the concept is far from cliche.

Anywho. If Katanas were two handed, there'd be a new two handed wielding class; But sheaths in general would be a fine add on.

I skimmed through all the replies, and I do think that the Assassin is suppose to be a Ninja without coming out and calling it a Ninja. Perhaps a Samurai class could be made to specifically cover the whole Samurai look, without making a new set of armor just to back the Warrior look like a Samurai.

This argument seems premature. How do we know that there are no samurai armor in Factions? Has anyone here seen ALL the possible armors? I dare say not. We've, at the most, seen the stuff from the preview weekend. I seriously doubt Anet would have showed us all the possible armors at the preview.
(Also keep in mind that Anet does add bits and pieces of content...)

So perhaps there is samurai and ninja stuff. Who knows?

As for katana, I think the off-hand counter part would more likely be vambrace (armored sleeve) than sheath. There should also be paired wazikashi for the assassin. Both of these are actual styles.

Finally, while I am aware of many other asian weapons, the Japanese stuff is more popular in the US (Japan and US has one of those love-hate relationships, I think)...

BTW, I believe that the ball-hammer is an actual Chinese weapon. The Anet version might be actually derived from middle age maces, but there actually is a two-handed ball-hammer in Chinese history.

Similarly, the tribal blade, while possible derived from middle easter falchion, is known as "dao" in Chinese -- an extremely common infantry weapon.

Yes... I myself had my character at the FPE event equipped at one time with a purple 15-22 "Dadao sword" which indeed looked similar the current "Tribal Blade" in use for the prophecies campaign (any explanation for the extra "Da" at the front?)...

I don't know... it's bigger?

I agree with hidden_agenda... you can't really say that there ISN'T samurai armor in the game yet... And it seems perfectly reasonable to include it. Guess we'll just have to wait until Factions comes out to find out?

"da" means large in chinese
"shou" means small.

Common usage:

"da-dao" means a single edged sword similar in shape to the tribal blade

"shou-dao" means a similar shape but dagger like blade (somewhat like a bowie).

be forewarned, my pinyin (ability to spell the chinese pronounciation with english alphabet) seriously SUCKS so take all my pin-yin spelling with a ton of salt...

The falchion is a european backsword derived from the german langmesser, fashioned after a rough farming utility blade. ~lelele~

Yes, it sucks. Yes, it's stupid.
Yes, keep fighting against these idiotic generalizations.
Kudos.

Actually, considering the Japanese have had much of a "warrior spirit" in history, it is perfectly normal for their warriors to be so well known to other cultures.

You can't expect everyone to know everything these is to know about every country on the map. I bet there are tons of things you dont know about Quebec, but you don't see me bitching about it.

Stop the bickering.Samurai armor and ninja garments are cool for the Cantha setting. Warrior classes in every civilization wore their weapons to display their status to others.Having sheathed weapons in towns and outposts would be a good addition to the world's appeal to the reality/fantasy setting. Realisticly,a sword with no form of sheath is unheard of. This goes for either game world setting. This is a solid point of contention.Where do our weapons go? Back in the full bags in every town we enter? Thin air? The guards at the gates of every town holds them for us? And the shields? What of them? They could be on our backs, captain america like, with the sword(or wand/rod) tucked snug between our shoulder blades. Just a point to think of. Are weapons can't just vanish!
